Supporting Children and Young People

The Chinese Information and Advice Centre has launched a new program called the Sunflower Programme for children and young people affected by domestic violence.

Domestic violence is a pattern of abuse where one person hurts or bullies someone that they live with, or are in a relationship with. Domestic violence can take many forms; physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and financial abuse.

We provide free CONFIDENTIAL advice in English, Mandarin and Cantonese. We understand that sometimes it helps just to talk to someone, to know that you are not alone. We can advise you on your options. We can provide emotional support. Or, we can just listen. There is never any pressure to act in any way you are not comfortable with.

Abuse and domestic violence can happen when one person does not respect the person they are in a relationship with. Having respect for each other is necessary for a healthy relationship.

Cultural differences can make it feel like it is more difficult to get help. For example, because of the value placed on family life and harmony in the Chinese culture it can be seen as "loosing face" to admit that you are experiencing problems at home. It is important to remember that you are not along and that abuse is wrong.

If you would like support or advice on any of the issues raised above, please call the Sunflower Programme: 0845 3131 868 (ext. 221), Monday - Friday, 10am - 5pm.
